The collection presented here showcases an overview of Herd Of The Ether Space sound collage improvisations which were recorded through a Frippertronics-style tape loop system at different points and by different configurations of artists during the 1980s. Interested listeners are encouraged to explore the huge collection of HOTES recordings hosted online at archive.org, particularly some of the more lengthy pieces from this decade (up to 45 minutes) that could not be included in this overview.
Throughout most of the 1980s, HOTES did not consider itself to be a "band" at all. Instead, its ever-evolving membership was simply an unorganized, undefined group of sonic explorers, who enjoyed getting together on occasion to record improvised audio adventures. By the time its core contributors finally decided to give the group a proper name in 1989, many hours of HOTES recordings had already been created. Being the curator of these recordings, C. Goff III went about editing up the collection and releasing it to the public on cassette tapes between 1989 and 1992. Most of these recordings were later made available on the internet through a 21-volume chronological series called: "Tape Loop Improvisations" :

Herd Of The Ether Space continued to expand its membership during the 1990's. Taped Rugs Productions, now celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2020, has released 41 HOTES albums on CD and cassette (including this one). For the genuinely curious, a highly-detailed, complete written history of HOTES is available online: http://www.archive.org/details/TheHistoryOfHerdOfTheEtherSpace1980s1990s
